For more than 50 years, Home Supply & Lumber Center has provided an extensive line of construction materials to do-it-yourselfers and contractors in the Hawthorne, New Jersey, area. Home Supply & Lumber offers all its customers in-depth product knowledge and personalized customer services. The company also provides a complete array of millwork for construction and remodeling projects.

When engaging in home improvement projects, many homeowners may encounter the term “millwork,” but be unsure of its meaning. Simply put, millwork means construction elements created by a sawmill. The term encompasses items such as interior doors, doorframes, window casings, trims, and moldings. While some millwork can include some types of cabinetry, most carpentry and construction experts consider cabinetry as its own category.

In the past, most homes featured millwork finished with the same color. However, more homeowners are taking a mix-and-match approach with millwork. For example, they may select two different wood species or finishes or opt for some painted and some stained millwork in an area.

How to Choose the Right Front Door for Your Home

Serving the communities of Northern New Jersey from its base in Hawthorne, Home Supply & Lumber has operated for more than 50 years. Home Supply & Lumber Center offers support staff to help homeowners find answers, and its kitchen department includes a team of carpenters, coordinators, and designers to help streamline the kitchen installation process.

The front door is often the first thing that guests see when visiting your home, and for many homeowners, choosing the right door is a detail-oriented endeavor. Here are a few tips for choosing the right exterior door for you:

1. Measurement: Set by the International Residential Code, the average door size is 36 inches wide by 80 inches high, and most exterior doors are built to these specs; however, many exterior door frames, especially in craftsman homes, have different measurements. The first thing to do when picking a front door is to determine what size you need.

2. Style: As a general guideline, a front door should match the house's style of architecture. That said, you still have a lot of freedom in regard to the style of door that you choose. Bold colors are big in 2015, or perhaps you want a door with an arched top? The front door is a great way to give your home a touch of personality.

3. Durability: A front door has to endure a lot: friends and family rushing in and out; rainstorms; and potentially wood-splitting frosts. Additionally, it needs to be strong enough to protect against potential intruders. New advancements in wooden doors have made them very good at resisting rot, and some metal doors provide superior durability while offering a stylish appearance. Ask your local building supplier about the latest advancements in door durability.

Protecting Your Mahogany Deck Investment

Serving the Hawthorne, New Jersey, community for more than 50 years, Home Supply & Lumber Center offers a full range of hardware, decking, and lumber materials. Home Supply & Lumber Center maintains a staff of knowledgable personnel who are dedicated to helping customers find the best materials for the project at hand. Traditional natural wood mainstays for long-lasting, weather-resistant decks include redwood and cedar.

In recent years, more exotic wood varieties have become popular, including meranti mahogany from Southeast Asia and South American cambara mahogany. Mahogany can last for years in its original color, with the proper care. In order to ensure that the original rich-hued reddish brown color is maintained, it makes sense to regularly apply a UV-blocking protective coating that is both oil-based and pigmented. The deck should initially be treated within a few weeks of installation and, in situations where it gets abundant direct sunlight, each year thereafter. A critical point is to avoid thinly formulated deck treatments that will not fully soak into a dense wood like mahogany. While many penetrating oils are in a shade of brown, there are products on the market that help preserve the natural reddish hue of mahogany, and it is worth seeking these out.

Remodeling a Too-small Kitchen

Located in Hawthorne, New Jersey, Home Supply & Lumber Center works closely with customers to help them with their unique building and design needs. As well as selling many different types of lumber and hardware, Home Supply & Lumber provides design services for customers interested in remodeling part of their homes, such as the kitchen, to take advantage of the available space.

A too-small kitchen is a common complaint among many homeowners. They might struggle to find room in the kitchen for storage, food preparation, and eating. Oftentimes, it is possible to expand the kitchen by taking down a wall between the kitchen and a neighboring room, such as a dining room. However, if such an approach is not feasible, there are other ways to improve a kitchen that contains limited square footage by maximizing the available space.

One such approach is to re-evaluate storage. Different types of cabinetry and shelving, such as rotating lazy Susan cabinets, make it easier to store more items. Another approach is to consider an alternative to a table or island. While tables and kitchen islands are highly useful in some kitchens, they simply don’t fit in many smaller spaces.

Instead, a homeowner might consider installing a countertop along a wall to serve as a breakfast bar. This approach effectively turns a small into an eat-in kitchen when a table does not fit. And since the countertop is narrow and stools or chairs can be stored underneath it when not in use, the strategy makes effective use of a small space. The ability to put a storage rack or cabinetry above this countertop is another advantage.

Knowledgeable about lumber and millwork, the staff at Home Supply & Lumber Center advises clients on choosing the right pieces of lumber for every job, including kitchen renovations and new installations.

Lumber consists of hardwoods and softwoods. Defined by their pore openings, the hardwoods include cherry, maple, oak, and poplar. Softwoods come from coniferous (or evergreen) trees and range from cedar to pine. Both hardwoods and softwoods receive individualized grades based on their defects.

Outside of these characteristics, lumber also has varying usage characteristics. Rot-resistant, insect-resistant, pressure treated lumber is exclusively for outside usage. Heavier, denser, and stronger than other forms of wood, decking wood includes pressure treated lumber or composite wood, which combines wood with plastic. Used mainly for shelves and sheathing, plywood and oriented strand board come from manufactured wood products, wood byproducts, and glue or resin. General boards come in a variety of sizes and weights to suit various purposes.

Installing drywall, one of the most common home building and renovation materials, can seem daunting at first, but drywall installation doesn’t have to be a complex process. Installing the drywall to minimize the number of joints is key, as taping the joints smoothly is usually the most difficult part of the job. Always start at the ceiling when installing drywall, and either construct or rent T-braces to hold a panel in place during installation. Starting at the center of the panel and working out, nail the drywall to the joists at 6-inch intervals. Be sure to give each nail an extra tap to dimple the surface without breaking the paper.

When hanging wall panels, cut areas for outlets and switches before mounting. Butt each panel against the ceiling and nail in 6-inch intervals beginning 4 inches from the top. Once the walls and ceiling are complete, the joints can be carefully taped.

Serving Hawthorne, New Jersey, for more than 35 years, Home Supply provides a full range of home improvement supplies and installation services. The knowledgeable staff in the kitchen department at Home Supply in Hawthorne includes design experts, carpenters, and dedicated customer service representatives. Visitors to the Home Supply kitchen showroom and retail outlet find design ideas and resources to create a dream kitchen.

A new concept in kitchen remodeling, called a make-under, has swept across the country. A kitchen make-under represents a return to simplicity and efficiency, and liberation from the stress often associated with kitchen redesigns.

A kitchen make-under affects all the aspects of a kitchen. With a make-under, a streamlined power base allows users to take advantage of their various kitchen gadgets without cluttering counter space. In many kitchens, the sink area also tends to attract clutter with various soap dispensers, filters, and cleaning tools. A make-under might include installing a single-handle faucet that eliminates the need for a spate spray attachment and traditional water pressure handles. A simple caddy holds cleaning items and minimizes clutter.
